Margaret Smith

Sadly our dear friend and beloved committee member passed away on 18th April after a short illness. Margaret was a lifelong member of Shirley Roads Club, a contemporary of many strong Midlands lady competitors, also riding against the legendary Beryl Burton when BB was the supreme athlete and champion. After retiring from racing in her 70s, she took up running and competed in the local Parkruns, amassing almost 500 of these 5km Saturday competitions. She would still take part using her wheeled walking frame once she lost the fitness to run unaided, her constant companion until a year or so back was the lovely Luna, her best friend after her partner Dick Hewitt died in 2017. She also held the role of Pasha in the Buckshee Wheelers, promoting the Bully Beef 25 and its subsequent shorter TTs, until the group closed a few years ago.

I first knew Margaret from riding Tandem TTs back in the 90s with Dick, then I joined the District Committee a few years later, and she was there with her caring attitude, and words of wisdom for the new boy! Most recently we met purely by chance at Hatton Locks Cafe where she was a regular customer with a reserved table three times a week.

Once we have any more information about funeral arrangements, I will pass it on.

Best Regards,

Steve Walker
